Children of Prayas perform on World Day Against Child Labour

One of the most painful realities of the Indian context is the phenomenon of child labour.

In a country which is hugely over-populated and where illiteracy is rampant, employing children is seen as an easy way out for people looking for cheap labour. Therefore, the rights of children, who are entitled to education, and to a healthy physical, mental and emotional development, and above all, to childhood, have suffered.

On 12th June, 2007, children from two of Prayas’ projects will perform musical and dance pieces at Kamani Auditorium, as a culmination of a workshop conducted by the Sahitya Kala Parishad.

Call it a coincidence, but this day also happens to be World Day Against Child Labour, and it seems only fitting to celebrate this cause in such a manner.

On a day like today, it is important for us to realize that it is not enough to pay lip service to the cause of child welfare, and indifference is not an option. Only through genuine and sincere efforts can we hope to live in a world where children are allowed to be children.
